Elmer Abel Tongo Tarrillo: High quality seeds improve production

Elmer Abel Tongo Tarrillo, 37 Chucmar
Community, Cajamarca, Perú

We used to use our seeds to plant from harvest to harvest. Now we have done soil analysis of our lands. We now use certified good quality seeds.

Our dream as a community is that our potato, the Chucmarina, is sold all over Peru and even the world.

These last few months, thanks to the International Potato Center (CIP for its acronym in Spanish) we’ve planted 20 clones. We’re testing them for resistance and texture so that we have new seeds that are more resistant to disease and pests.

“Chucmarina (CIP 393371.58 – INIA 310) was developed by the Department of Crop Improvement of the International Potato Center (CIP) and released in Peru by Instituto Nacional de Innovación Agraria (INIA-National Institute for Agrarian Innovation) in 2007. It is obtained by the cross of CIP 387170.16 x CIP 389746.2. In addition to Peru, it is cultivated by farmers in Costa Rica, Ethiopia and Kenya.”
