Biography
Marcel Gatto is an agricultural economist based in Johannesburg, South Africa. He holds an MSc in International Development Studies from Wageningen University and a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Goettingen. At CIP, he has been involved in several impact assessments in Asian and Sub-Saharan African countries on the effects of agricultural innovations on farm-level outcomes. His research interests focus on food security, poverty alleviation, conservation agriculture, and seed systems improvement. Marcel is leading work on monitoring varietal adoption and developing low-cost AI-based methods. He is a “Work Package” leader in the initiative “Seed Equal” and co-leads the task force on impact assessment in the “Genetics Innovations Science Group.”
