The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) of Rwanda and the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) have launched a public-private partnership to benefit over 500,000 Rwandan farming households by developing high-yield, pest- and disease-resistant varieties of cassava, maize, and potatoes. Named the Rwanda Agricultural Biotechnology Programme, this initiative aims to boost productivity and resilience in these essential crops, enhancing food security and livelihoods. Coordinated by AATF and the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB), the program includes key partners such as the International Potato Center (CIP), Michigan State University (MSU), Bayer, the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), and the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center.
