Better adaptation to subtropical lowlands

CIP’s objective is to establish an integrated breeding system that delivers adapted populations and varieties of early maturing potatoes, which meet the requirements of consumers and markets. CIP scientists are working to develop a table potato with virus resistance that can mature in 70 days and be grown during the dry, cooler, fallow periods between grain crops along with an 80-day maturing potato that also confers virus resistance and can be used for processing.

Other key characteristics being developed to meet user needs are potatoes with 20% dry matter and suitable for cold chipping, along with nutrient-rich potatoes for post-rice markets in Bangladesh and India.
