The International Potato Center (CIP) announces with great sadness the passing of Dr. Hubert Zandstra, who served as CIP’s Director General from 1991 to 2005. A visionary leader in agricultural research and development, Dr. Zandstra played a pivotal role in shaping CIP into a globally recognized center of excellence for root and tuber crops.

During his 14 years of leadership, Dr. Zandstra guided CIP through a period of scientific expansion, institutional strengthening, and global outreach. He championed a broadened research agenda that extended beyond potato to include sweetpotato, Andean roots and tubers, and natural resource management in mountain regions. This expanded vision helped position CIP at the forefront of innovation in agricultural sustainability, nutrition, and agrobiodiversity.
One of his most enduring contributions was the creation of the Hubert Zandstra Biodiversity Complex, home to CIP’s world-renowned Genebank. This facility laid the groundwork for CIP’s global cryopreservation program. The lasting impact of Dr. Zandstra’s vision was evident again last month, when CIP welcomed visitors from around the world to celebrate the opening of its new Cryopreservation Vault, a milestone directly linked to the foundation he built.
Dr. Zandstra’s leadership was widely recognized across the scientific and development communities. The Government of Peru awarded him the Great Cross for Distinguished Service, one of its highest honors, and universities in Colombia and Peru granted him honorary degrees for his contributions to agricultural science and rural development. His tenure at CIP also encompassed years of instability and security challenges in Peru, during which his steadfast commitment to the organization and to the farmers and communities CIP serves earned him deep respect from staff and partners alike.
Today, CIP’s global research programs continue to build on the scientific and institutional foundations laid during Dr. Zandstra’s tenure. His belief in the power of agriculture to improve livelihoods, strengthen resilience, and safeguard biodiversity remains central to CIP’s mission and is reflected in our CIP2030 Strategy.
We honor Dr. Zandstra’s life, leadership, and lasting legacy with gratitude. His vision and dedication will continue to inspire CIP and its partners in the years ahead.
