Svalbard’s Unwanted Seeds and the Role of Cryopreservation

Join us for a panel discussion on cryopreservation’s critical role in safeguarding crop diversity, highlighting CIP’s pioneering work in establishing one of the world’s largest potato cryobanks. Learn about the advanced protocols developed for preserving potato shoot tips and bananas, ensuring the long-term viability of these essential crops.

This event will explore how cryopreservation offers a solution for preserving recalcitrant seeds and clonally propagated crops, which cannot be stored in traditional seed banks like Svalbard. The panel will also showcase the importance of collaboration, focusing on the Latin American Cryopreservation Network’s efforts in knowledge sharing, capacity building, and resource mobilization.
