In an exemplary demonstration of community engagement and gender awareness, the GROWING project commemorated International Women’s Day in Alhassan Kura, under the banner of this year’s theme, “Inspiring Inclusion.” The event meticulously showcased the project’s commitment to fostering gender equality and empowering communities through a blend of cultural representation, educational discourse, and nutritional innovation. This celebration not only highlighted the strides made towards inclusive participation in societal development but also underscored the symbiotic relationship between nutritional awareness and gender equality in building resilient communities.

Cultural Performances as Catalysts for Change

A central feature of the day’s events was a series of cultural performances that adeptly illustrated the potential for increased female participation in familial decision-making processes. These enactments served as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of gender inclusivity within the domestic sphere. Dr. Amina Jibril, one of the distinguished guest speakers, encapsulated the essence of the performances in her remark, “Empowering women to participate in decision-making processes enriches family dynamics and lays the groundwork for a more equitable society.”

Nutritional Awareness and Gender Equality

The culinary competition underscored the intersection of nutritional awareness and gender equality. Participants, representing the GFC (GROWING’s Food Champions), showcased their culinary skills using ingredients renowned for their nutritional value, such as amaranth, moringa, sweet potato, soya beans, and groundnuts. This segment highlighted the critical role of equitable access to nutritional knowledge and resources in promoting family health and wellness. Chef Hakeem Olajuwon, another guest speaker, eloquently tied the themes of the event together, stating, “A balanced diet is the cornerstone of a healthy family. By ensuring that both men and women have equal opportunities to learn about and access nutritious foods, we can lay a stronger foundation for our children’s future.”
