Agrobiodiversity for people, the planet and prosperity:
CIP’s 50th anniversary in Latin America and the Caribbean
Over the last 50 years, CIP research discoveries, technologies, and innovations have collectively improved the lives of millions around the world. As we look toward our next half-century of research on behalf of the world’s smallholder farmers, we know our work is a solid investment: The SOAR Foundation recently estimated that CIP has generated USD 10 for each dollar invested in its research for development efforts. Â
Since its founding 1971, CIP’s headquarters have been located in Peru. As the center of origin for many root and tuber crops, this location has set the foundation a special relationship between the CGIAR and Peru. Â
The Andes Mountains, more generally, is an area of profound crop and genetic diversity that holds promise for addressing challenges of poverty, climate change, and food and nutrition security. This region has much to share with the world in terms of research, agricultural practices, and traditional knowledge: “In the Andes, it’s agrobiodiversity for people, the planet and prosperity.” Â
